Muscle Mussels in May?
Who would have thought that a mussel's adhesive powers would have intrigued scientists to study its sticky properties?
Mussels anchor themselves to surfaces by secreting proteins that form a silky filament called a byssus. In the picture below, you can see a mussel attached to a Teflon sheet! Who knew that these yummy molluscs had such incredible adhesive properties!
Photograph courtesy Haeshin Lee and Phillip Messersmith, Northwestern UniversityApart from their 'strength', mussels also happen to taste really good! Food For Thought is running a special course for this month - Mussels in May! Delivered fresh daily, come by early to fill your tummy with these Kinkawooka mussels from Australia! Cooked in three different styles, we've paired each flavour up with a cider by Thatcher!
Fine English ciders from Thatchers: Green Goblin, Old Rascal & KatyMussels in Creamy Laksa Broth - sauteed with roasted capsicum, thickened with fresh cream and garnished with laksa leaves!
Pair it with Thatchers Katy cider - light and fragrant with the sweet flavour of apples. Mussels in White Wine - sauteed with garlic and shallots, tossed with diced tomatoes and fresh parsley. Pair it with Thatchers Green Goblin cider - full-bodied and bittersweet, with hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Mussels in Tuscan Tomato Stew - chunky tomatoes simmered with garlic and onions, garnished with fresh thyme! Pair it with Thatchers Old Rascal cider - mellow and dry, coupled with mild notes of citrus and honey. All mussel dishes come with a choice of either the linguine or rosemary fries! Have you made your way to Food For Thought (available at both outlets to try our mussels yet? Which is your favourite mussel dish?
One last fun fact: male mussels have a pale, whitish hue whereas female mussels are of a warmer, orange tone!

Food For Thought: Aveda's 'Walk for Water' represented the distance some women in developing countries have to walk just to collect water for their families.
Every day is earth day at Aveda, but during the month of April, Aveda salon professionals, employees and customers unite to raise funds and awareness for environmental issues around the world. They also raised funds for global water projects by selling 'Light The Way' candles in their salons!
Why a walk for water? In remote villages such as Tilwari, India, women spend hours walking to and fro between their homes and water sources for drinking and household uses. This water is often untreated and may pose health risks to them and their families. The walk that Food For Thought took with Aveda is symbolic of the average distance that these women have to walk each day to collect water.
It was a sunny-bright day on the 24th of April and the participants of Aveda's 'Walk For Water' gathered at Food For Thought. Little cups of Aveda's organic 'Comforting Tea' of licorice root and peppermint was served all around (which had an interesting, atypical minty taste!) while everyone registered for the walk.
'Comforting Tea'
The Food For Thought crew with our Creative Director at the front!Kickstarting the walk with basic warm up moves.
Surrounded by lush greens and breathing in the fresh, crisp air - it was a refreshing change to be out and about in early in the morning. Everyone was walking with gusto!Gorgeous waterfall installation at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
We stopped by the Burkhill Hall to experience Aveda's rituals and for a holistic yoga relaxation session. Half-way there! Yeah!Holistic yoga session that was serene and soothing, with Aveda's chakra aroma wafting through the room.
We completed the rest of the walk and headed back to Food For Thought for breakfast! Food For Thought's wholesome and hearty breakfast spread.*
It's hard to imagine having to walk such a distance more than once a day to simply fetch water and more often than not, untreated water that is potentially harmful. The walk with Aveda serves as a reminder that the act of turning on a tap to get clean water is so simple and convenient that we often forget that it's the little things in life that we should appreciate the most.
Food For Thought was also presented with a little something! It was a meaningful morning for all of us and we hope that our readers, by means of our efforts, can feel so too!

Food For Thought celebrates International World Book & Copyright Day!
23 April marks the World Book & Copyright Day and Food For Thought will be celebrating it till the end of April! Borne from the tradition of Saint George's Day in Catalonia whereby a rose is given for every book sold, UNESCO chose the same date, 23 April, to celebrate World Book Day.
Food For Thought believes in the right to education and literacy (our Mission 4!), which is why World Book Day is meaningful to us.
Remember our merchandise corner unique to FFT @ 8Q?
We play our part for World Book day by shelving preloved books (for sale) in our merchandise corner!
These books were donated by our kind patrons and what we do we do with them? Dress them up in new clothes while they wait for a new home! Best of all, all profits go to the Alola Foundation Scholarship Program, which sponsors education for youths in Timor-Leste.
Want to see how we have prepared this World Book Day celebration for you? We'll share some pictures with you!

Have you heard? Earth Day is coming up soon, do your part and live green with Food For Thought!
Earth Day is a commemoration of environmental awareness since 1970. The Earth Day network focuses on both helping the environment and also ensuring the sustainability of the environment. It all began with various campaigns to fight oil spills, factories that were causing pollution to air and water, toxic power plants that inadvertantly caused a loss of natural habitat and subsequently the extinction of wildlife in America. By the 1990s, the movement had spread worldwide and was followed by an upsurge in recycling around the world and global movements to fight climate change.
One such important issue that resonates with us at Food For Thought is clean water. Untreated water from various sources of industrial waste dumping, natural disasters such as tsunamis, flooding can cause debilitating and fatal diseases when drank. At Food For Thought outlets, we serve a free flow of water and encourage customers to donate to our water jar. Every $2 donated will bless an African the same privilege of clean water for a year!
This year Food For Thought will be further supporting Aveda and their cause to "Walk For Water" on the 24th of April! Here's a sneak peek:
Stay tuned for more pictures and updates about Aveda and Food For Thought's particpation in this 'Walk For Water' campaign!
What about you, our dear foodie reader? Are there any other things that you can do to start helping the environment? Share your thoughts with us!
